Can I use my old SIM Card with my new phone?

Question by Guest | Last update on 2021-06-28 | Created on 2015-01-26

I would like to purchase a new smartphone without contract, because I would like to keep my old mobile service provider and my current terms.

Is it possible to just put my old SIM card into the new mobile phone without any problems in order to just transfer the present contract? Or can this lead to any problems?

In principle, it should not be a problem to just change the mobile device and to take over the SIM card.

Although, you should keep in mind, that there are different SIM card formats available (Mini-SIM, Micro-SIM, Nano-SIM and the larger normal old size). At this point, you should care about which format you currently have and which format is required by your new phone. If the format is not the same, probably, you can use a SIM card adapter or you can just order a new SIM card from your provider. This should also be possible within an ongoing contract.

Otherwise, you must make sure, that your new phone does not have a SIM lock. Such a SIM lock is a blockade making devices only usable with specific kinds of SIM cards or providers. But if you are buying your phone without contract somewhere in an electronics store, the phone should not be sim locked.
