Football/Soccer: How long was the longest penalty shootout?

Question by Hero12 | Last update on 2021-06-25 | Created on 2014-07-06

Usually, a penalty shootout is continued until a winner has been clearly determined. Theoretically, this can take forever if both teams are shooting the same number of goals and the goalkeeper is holding the same number of penalty kicks.

Of course, from this facts a particular question arises: Which penalty shootout lasted the longest time? Is there anyone knowing something about it?

The longest penalty shootout, I have ever heard about, was in a match between two football clubs in Hamburg. It happened in the first round of the 2. Liga-Pokal 2008 between Eintracht Norderstedt II and SC Sternschanze II.

The game lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes. Eintracht Norderstedt II won with 21-20.
