Has Uruguay ever been Football World Champion?

Question by Wolta | 2018-07-02 at 10:04

Has Uruguay ever won the World Cup? Uruguay managed to defeat Portugal in the last sixteens of the 2018 World Cup and entered the quarter-finals. So far Uruguay has not been known to me as a football nation. Therefore, my question, whether Uruguay has once won the finals and reached the title.

Uruguay have even managed to become world champions in football twice:

  • 1930 at the World Cup in their own country
  • 1950 at the World Cup in Brazil

In 1930, Uruguay won the first ever World Cup, hosted in their own country. In 1930, Uruguay defeated Argentina with 4-2 in the final. In 1950 there was no endgame in the classical sense, as all teams competed against each other and the world champion was decided by points.

In the years after 1950, however, it has become quiet around Uruguay. After all, Uruguay reached the semi-finals in 1954 (in Switzerland), 1970 (in Mexico) and 2010 (in South Africa). In all three years, Uruguay landed on the fourth place after playing the third place match: 1954 with 1-3 against Austria, 1970 with 0-1 against Germany and 2010 with 2-3 again against Germany.

More information can be found in the list of all previous World Cup Champions and in the overview of which countries have won the World Cup and how often.
