That FC Bayern Munich (or FC Bayern München in German) is the record champion of the first German men's football league Bundesliga in Germany, is beyond question. But which team is in second place and in which years and how often did the individual teams manage to become Germany's best team (Deutscher Meister)?

The following table provides you with the answer and shows all previous German Champions since this title was first determined by the German Football Association (Deutscher Fußballbund, DFB) in 1903. From 1948 to 1991, the East German GDR teams did not take part in the only Western German Championship at the time.

With 33 wins, Bayern Munich (Bayern München) is the undisputed winner of the most titles. To challenge Bayern this place, it would take decades, because the second place is hold by the 1st FC Nuremberg (1. FC Nürnberg) with only 9 titles and Nuremberg was last German Champion in 1968.

Another speciality is the season 1940/1941, in which the Austrian club SK Rapid Wien became German Football Champion. SK Rapid Wien is the only club with a German Championship title that is not located on the current territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. This circumstance was made possible by the "annexation" of Austria during the German National Socialist era.

Years without a German Football Champion

In the years 1904, 1915 to 1919, 1922 as well as 1945 there was no German Champion determined or could not be determined. Accordingly, these years are missing in the table. You can find out why there was no champion in these years in the article about the years without a German Champion in football. There you will also find out why the year 1922 for the Hamburg SV is listed in brackets in the table.

When Fürth became champion in 1914, 1926 and 1929, they were simply called SpVgg Fürth - the term "Greuther" was added much later.

When Karlsruher SC became champion, they were not called KSC either, but rather Phönix Karlsruhe. And Hertha BSC Berlin also didn't exist in the 1930s.

For this reason and in order to be able to better compare the rersults, the clubs are listed with their current names and supplemented with the titles of their predecessor clubs.
