Smartphone: Can I make calls and browse the Internet at the same time?

Question by Guest | 2015-01-08 at 09:10

Currently, I am still owner of an old mobile phone without all of this new functionality. Before I am purchasing one of those modern smartphones, I would like to know whether it is possible to call somebody and to surf the Internet (chat, websites) simultaneously using such a smartphone.

Is this possible without any problems? Or should I have to keep something in mind when doing so? Thank you very much for your answers.

Calling and surfing the web at the same time is only possible with using the new mobile network standards since UMTS/3G. So, whenever your smartphone is indicating 3G, H, H+, 4G or LTE as data connection, it is possible.

With the old standards GPRS and EDGE (displayed as 2G, G or E symbol in the status bar), calling and browsing simultaneously is not yet possible. If you should to be connected with one of those networks, the Internet connection will be cut in case you are called or you are calling someone.

By default, your mobile phone should always try to contact with the best network currently available, which means that in most cases it should be possible to do both. But it is also possible to adjust the settings off your device regarding this point, for example you can disable UMTS or LTE on most devices. With this settings,

it is not possible at all.
