Is AIDS transmitted at birth?

Question by Guest | 2018-03-11 at 19:11

I know a girl who has AIDS and now wants to have a baby. I wonder now if that is not irresponsible to the child, because then the child will certainly also get AIDS. Or is AIDS not transmitted at birth?

AIDS or HIV is transmitted through the blood and through various other body fluids such as semen, breast milk and vaginal fluid.

Before birth, the blood circulation of mother and child are separated, so that in this period of time, the chance of an infection is very rare - although infection can not be excluded in principle.

It usually comes to a contagion only when the infant gets into contact with the blood or other body fluids of the mother at birth (and that's quite probably). For this reason, a caesarean section is actually always made with an HIV-infected mother in order to keep the contact of the blood as short as possible.

Because the longer the child comes in contact with the fluids and the blood, the greater the likelihood of infection is.

Conclusion: The child can be infected, but it does not have to.

There are also options to take certain medications to reduce the risk for the child at birth even further. But you would have to ask a doctor for more information about that.

There are healthy children of AIDS-ill mothers, but with a certain probability, you can not say with 100 percent that the child will get well.

That depends on the circumstances, the attending physicians and certainly also on the luck that the child and the mother has.
