Why do all Russians have installed a camera in their car?

Question by Sledge | 2015-02-20 at 17:29

When watching all of the YouTube videos showing accidents, it is striking that almost all of those videos are coming from Russia and were taken with cameras that were apparently installed at the front of the car.

Also the one or other video of a comet impact was recorded by such a Russian car camera. Some of those shots are obviously only possible because no one else is constantly filming the sky and the surrounding area.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and why exactly in Russia? Or is there a legal requirement, provision or regulation to do so?

As far as I know, many Russians have installed cameras in their cars to protect themselves. There is no provision or legal requirement for having car cameras in Russia, but over 90% of the Russian cars should be equipped with a camera.

Since many people in Russia are driving very crazy, partly under the influence of alcohol, again and again, it comes to serious accidents. In order that the driver can safeguard or to have an evidence for the insurance - for example in case of the question who has to blame for the accident - a lot of people are recording all of their journeys in precaution to later have a proof.

The front camera is most popular, but partly, there are even already installed cameras at the rear and the side of the car.
