Online Converter: Horsepower (hp) - Kilowatt (kW)
Tool by Stefan Trost
Car manufacturers and dealers are nowadays required by law to indicate the power of their cars in kilowatts (kW). However, most people still have more understanding of the in the meantime outdated unit called horsepower (hp).
With our online calculator you can convert kW values into hp or vice versa, horsepower figures into kilowatts. To do this, simply enter a horsepower value or a kilowatt value into the respective input field. The calculator will then automatically show you the converted value in the other field.
Definition of the Horsepower
The horsepower is an old unit that goes back to James Watt. It was intended to demonstrate how many horses could replace a machine. The average power of such a workhorse was defined as 0.73549875 kW, which makes it possible to convert kilowatts and horsepower into each other. One kilowatt therefore corresponds to 1/0.73549875 hp, what is approximately 1.35962162 hp.
1 kW equals 1.35962162 hp
1 hp equals 0.73549875 kW
Conversion of other Units
For converting additional units, I can recommend my tool Unit Converter, with which you can convert over 4500 - even unusual - units from 33 different categories. While this calculator here uses the official definition of horsepower (PS) from the DIN standard 66036, the Unit Converter also provides you with some other horsepower definitions.
