The World Cup was not staged in the years 1942 and 1946 because of the Second World War. For 1942, Germany or Brazil was suggested as host.

In 1974, the country Germany only refers to the Federal Republic of Germany because the German Democratic Republic was not involved in the hosting. Also the World Cup winners of the championships in 1954 and 1974 only refer to the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 1986, the World Cup should be hosted in Colombia first. In the end, Mexico took it because Columbia has canceled the games for financial reasons.

In 2030, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the Football World Cup is scheduled to take place on three different continents for the first time. Spain and Portugal as European representatives as well as Morocco as African representative are the main hosts. In addition, only three matches are scheduled to take place in South America: one match in Uruguay (host and winner of the first World Cup in 1930), one match in Argentina (finalist and runner-up in the 1930 World Cup) and one game in Paraguay (home of the South American Football Association CONMEBOL).
