Are there still any Gaming Laptops with Drives?
Question by Guest | 2026-09-21 at 19:39
Unfortunately, nowadays, I can only find laptops without a drive or a burner in my online searches.
But back in 2016 I had one from Lenovo that even had two graphics cards, was still set to a Windows version new at that time and had a drive/burner.

Laptop manufacturers these days seem to be convinced that drives are no longer necessary. Many people probably only use USB sticks or even the cloud. In the long run, CDs and DVDs will probably die out just like the floppy disk. Or are there still any computers with floppy disk drives today?
Laptops make the beginning here, while desktop computers often still have drives even today. This development is also driven by the fact that customers apparently want increasingly thinner laptops and there is no longer any room for a DVD drive due to their height.
The last time I looked for a laptop, which was a while ago, I couldn't find a decent one with a drive. Unfortunately, the higher the class of the laptop (you said you're looking for a gaming laptop), the rarer you'll find drives in them. Of course, the market looked very different in 2016.
I would advise you to get a classic desktop computer instead of a laptop. This, you can equip as you wish and simply retrofit drives or anything else if the equipment was missing initially.
If you absolutely have to have a laptop and you can't find one with a drive, you can alternatively also get an external DVD drive or an external burner that you can connect to your laptop with a USB cable.

That is a very accurate observation. Modern laptops are designed to be thin and lightweight, which leaves no physical space for internal optical drives like CD/DVD readers.
If you still need to use CDs or DVDs with a newer laptop, the easiest and most practical solution is to buy a portable external USB DVD drive. These plug directly into your laptop's USB port, require no internal installation, and can be easily stored in a bag when not in use.
