Difference between Smart and Mobile Phone

Question by GetMeNow | 2016-04-11 at 16:28

Can someone explain to me what actually is the difference between smartphones and mobile phones? As far as I think, each smartphone is also a mobile phone, isn't it?

Finally, you can make phone calls or write text messages with smartphones and that are things you usually can also do with your normal mobile telephone.

Yes, smartphones are also mobile phones - however, mobile phones with much more functionality.

And therein lies the difference. Usually, you are speaking about a mobile phone in case that the devices are basically limited to the phone and text message functions with perhaps only a few additional functions.

Apart from that, you are speaking about a smartphone in case that the device is moving the original phone functions into the background and the phones are rather small computers and also can be used as such (large screen, camera, Internet functions, apps and programs can easily be installed and so on).

Of course, the transition between mobile phones and smart phones is smoothly and sometimes it is not easy to find the right category for devices that are something between. Remember the first smartphones you could buy in the late 90s - I think most of us would not describe those phones as a smartphone - although they already had some of that functionality even though not yet a touchscreen.
