Yes, it's very hard to learn Chinese.
One problem are the masses of signs Chinese has. It's not just learning 24 letters of an alphabet, it's learning thousands of characters - one for each word.
Additionally, when coming from the English language, another point is that Chinese is another language family. There are less similarities and even the pronunciation style is different. So, for example, learning an European language is much more easier, because there are also many similar words.
So, yes. It's hard. But you do not need a teacher in each case. You just have to learn. A teacher may be useful when it comes to the pronunciation.

Chinese's characters and grammars is very difficult. As you asid, they don't have a pattern like English language. Beside of that, they have 4 different tune when comes to speaking. I am struggling. and I often practice my Chinese online with some native Chinese people. Step by step, it will work.
