What are the stars and stripes on the US flag standing for?

Question by Lori | 2016-10-23 at 20:14

Does someone know what the stars and stripes you can see on the flag of the USA mean?

I consider that the number of stars and stripes as well as the colors do have a special meaning.

Yes, you are right. Everything you can find on the flag of the United States of America has a special meaning:

  • The 7 red and 6 white stripes are standing for the 13 founding states of the USA.
  • The 50 stars are standing for the current 50 states of the USA. According to the United States Flag Code, for each new state, a new star has to be added to the flag.
  • The colors red, white and blue are coming from the flag of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) as flag of the English colonies.

By the way, the arrangement of the stars has changed multiple times over the years, because again and again new states were added. For example, from 1776 to 1795, the arrangement was like a circle, from 1818 to 1819 starlike.
