The first Oscar awards presentation (Acadamy Awards) took place on 16 May, 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.
Unlike Today , the entire award ceremony for the best films lasted only 15 minutes, and the winners were already known (they have been notified three months in advance). In addition, it was even possible that one Oscar went to several movies at the same time.
Also, there were much less categories at the first award ceremony of the Oscars than today. While today there are 23 categories in total, in 1929, there were only half of them.
At the first Acadamy Awards films released between August 1, 1927 and August, 1 1928 were priced in the following categories:
- Best Picture
- Best Artistic Quality of Production
- Best Actor in a Leading Role
- Best Actress in a Leading Role
- Best Director, Comedy Picture
- Best Director, Dramatic Picture
- Best Original Story
- Best Adapted Screenplay
- Best Title Writing
- Best Cinematography
- Best Production Design
- Best Engineering Effects
The categories "Best Artistic Quality of Production", "Best Title Writing" and "Best Engineering Effects" were only awarded in 1929 and after that never again. Also the best original story is no longer honored today.
