New Monitor: Speakers stopped working

Question by Guest | 2016-06-11 at 22:14

I encountered a strange problem at my computer: since I have bought and set up a new screen, my loudspeakers are not working anymore!

I was very surprised about this conjunction, but obviously, there is really an association between the loudspeaker and the monitor. Every time, I am connecting my old screen again, everything is properly working. However, as soon as I am connecting my new screen, the speaker is quiet.

There seems to be no problem with myself there. In the Media Player as well as in the VLC Player, everything is shown as usual. Even the height of the volume varies in the media player visualisation.

I am despairing! Can someone help me?

It is sounding as if you have connected your monitor using an HDMI cable, that is audio capable. Your computer seems to be configured in a way that it is preferring the HDMI output port over the normal 3.5 mm cinch audio output port.

Whenever you are now connecting your new monitor, the audio signal is sent to your screen via the HDMI cable. Probably, your old screen has another cable, so that there is no problem with that there are.

The solution for the problem is the following: Go to your control panel and then on "Sound". Here you should find a list of all playback devices on the tab "Playback". For example:

  • Digital Output Device (HDMI)
  • Loudspeaker/Headphones

Most likely, in your configuration, the HDMI output is activated at this point. Click on Loudspeaker / Headphones (or any other audio output of your desire) and then on "Set Default" at the bottom. Now, it should work again.
