Smartphone Bar: Symbol with E

I have seen that my mobile phone is suddenly displaying an icon or symbol like a phone containing an E in its bar.
Can someone tell me what this could mean? Thank you very much.

A simple "E" is showing you the kind of data network with which you respectively your smartphone is currently connected (see here).
If the "e" is displayed permanently independent from the connection, it could also mean that your phone is in its energy safe mode (e extending for energy in this case). This would explain why the E is surrounded by a phone that icon.
