Android is an operating system for mobile phones or smartphones. So, the thing, that is Windows or Linux on computers or laptops, is Android at mobile phones. That means, Android is a program running on your mobile providing all basic functions and allowing applications (Apps) to be installed and to be executed on your phone.

Just as there are Windows, Linux or Apple Mac OS X for computers, there are also different systems for mobile phones and smartphones available. Android is the most common and probably most well-known of those systems (about 3/4 of all smartphones have Android). Android is used for example on Samsung smartphones, while other operating systems for mobile phones are Windows Phone/Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS, Symbian or iOS on the Apple iPhone.
