Why are pregnant woman not allowed to eat sushi?

Question by Guest | 2015-11-13 at 13:11

I rarely love sushi! If I could, I would eat nothing else the whole day!

However, I am pregnant since some weeks and one of my friends have almost hit the good food out of my hands when I wanted to eat some of my beloved sushi in his presence.

He claims that during pregnancy, you should not eat any sushi, because otherwise you endanger the welfare of your child! However, he could not explain the reason for that! He had just said that he have heard it somewhere and actually everyone should know and be aware of it.

Honestly, I have to say that I have never heard of it. Nevertheless, now, I have some concerns because obviously I do not want to endanger my child. Does anyone know more about this topic?

As you know, sushi contains raw fish. And during pregnancy, among other things, you should stay away from raw meat and raw fish.

The reason is that in raw fish and raw meat, germs and bacteria can easily and rapidly breed. Those can endanger the child. At this point, I have to mention, for example listeria, toxoplasmosis or botulism.

Of course, sushi do not necessarily have to contain germs or bacteria, but the risk is just too high. You may eat sushi without any problems, but if you can care about it, you should better play safe.

The fish in sushi can even be dangerous in two different ways! First, it is true that you should not eat raw fish during pregnancy.

But on the other hand, I have to note that many fish as contaminated with heavy metals such as lead and mercury, because fishes are filtering such substances from the sea.

Sometimes I wonder whether the healthy effects of fish will not be nullified because of that. You have to be careful which kind of fish you are purchasing!

And what about sushi with vegetables? You should actually be able to eat them safely - even if you are pregnant.

Unless, of course, in case that this sushi was cut with a knife that was used to cut fish-sushi before. Then, of course, even vegetarian sushi may be "contaminated".
