In the following table, you can find all countries that have won the finals of the European Football Championship so far and therefore have become European Football Champion that year.

In the first column, you can find the year, then the host country. In the last three columns, you can see the European Champion, the runners-up (second place) and the result of the final match.

Results, that are marked with ET were concluded after extra time. Games marked with PS have been decided in a penalty shootout.

In 1968, there was something special. After the first match between Italy and Yugoslavia, even after an extension, the match was still undecided with a score of 1-1. Because of there was no penalty shootout that time, a repetition of the finals were held. The repetition (that's what the R stands for) was won by Italy 2-0 against Yugoslavia.

Third Place Match

Incidentally, the match for the third place was only staged between 1960 and 1980. The results and winners can be found in the following table.

YearHost Country3rd PlaceScore4th Place
1960FranceCzechoslovakia2-0France
1964SpainHungary3-1 ETDenmark
1968ItalyEngland2-0Soviet Union
1972BelgiumBelgium2-1Hungary
1976YugoslaviaNetherlands3-2 ETYugoslavia
1980ItalyCzechoslovakia1-1 9-8 PSItaly

Since 1984, the third place was not determined any more. Again, also in this table, ET stands for results after extra time while PS is standing for penalty shootouts.
