How many World Cup Finals have been won on penalties?
Question by Guest | Last update on 2022-12-20 | Created on 2014-11-06
When I am watching the penalty shoot-outs at the different football/soccer tournaments, it seems to me as if it is just a decision of change rather than skill.
Personally, I would find it very frustrating when I would become world champion in this way or even if I would be knocked out because of a simple and random penalty shoot-out.
Therefore, I would like to know how many World Cup Finals have ever been decided on penalties. Is it rather an exception or the rule?

It is rather the exception. In all world championships so far, there was only three times a penalty shootout in the final. The match for the third place was even never decided in a penalty shootout.
In this table, you can find all of the other results of the World Cup Finals so far, if you want to know it in more detail.
