Cruise: May I stay on board when the ship docks?

Question by Guest | 2016-01-02 at 22:27

I am right before my first cruise. Almost every day, we will anchor in another town or city for which you can reserve various excursions on the ship.

However, there are some cities and towns for which I have not yet booked a trip. Therefore, my question is, whether you are also allowed to just remain on board of the cruise ship or whether it is mandatory to participate in the shore leave. And if so, do I really have to book such a guided tour or can I also just explore the corresponding city on my own?

No one forces you to go ashore and nobody forces you to book any excursions.

So, you can stay on board without any problems while the ship is at the port. Sometimes, that is quite exciting because under special circumstances, you can have nearly the whole ship and the attractions alone for you if all of the other guests are on the move.

But of course, you can also go ashore for your own away from any guided tour for exploring the land independently. The only thing you have to care about is that you are back on board in time before the ship costs. Usually, the leaving times of the ship are announced every day and you have to be at least 30 minutes before leaving back on the ship. As long as you can hold this time, you can leave and return to the ship as often as you want at any time during harbor time.

The only exception that can occur is that the location is too dangerous so that only guided tours are allowed. However, they will tell you if that is the case.
