Which player played most Football World Cups?

Question by Wolta | Last update on 2022-04-09 | Created on 2018-06-25

Are there any players who have more than once managed to be pitched to play at a Football World Cup (not just mere participation but also on the field at several World Championships in a row)?

If so, which players were that and how often did they play at a World Cup?

The record is five participations of a player at a World Cup.

It is noteworthy that this means that the player must have been in action for at least 20 years, as the World Cup is held only once every four years. In total, three players are holding this record:

  • Lothar Matthäus played for Germany in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998
  • Antonio Carbajal played for Mexico in 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966
  • Rafael Márquez also played for Mexico in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018

Gianluigi Buffon also participated in a World Cup for five times for his country Italy (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014), but was only in four of these championships on the field.

Interestingly, none of these record holders managed to become world champions twice. Lothar Matthäus became World Champion only in 1990, the Mexicans never. The record of being world champion for more than one time is kept by other players.
