Has France ever been Football World Champion?

Question by Wolta | Last update on 2022-12-21 | Created on 2018-06-30

How many times has France actually won a Football World Cup? I remember that France won in 1984 and 2000 at the European Championships. But what about France at the World Cup?

So far, France has won two World Cups and made it to win the title that year:

  • 1998 after a 3-0 against Brazil in their own country
  • 2018 after a 4-2 against Croatia in Russia

France was not the first nation to become world champion in their own country.

Apart from 1998 and 2018, France was in the final for two more times: On the one hand at the World Cup 2006 in Germany against Italy. On the other hand, at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar against Argentina. In both of these finals, France lost after a penalty shootout.

In the semifinals, France came three times in total: 1958 at the World Cup in Sweden (6-3 against Germany in the match for third place), 1982 at the World Cup in Spain (2-3 against Belgium in the match for third place) and 1986 at the World Cup in Mexico (4-2 against Belgium after extra time in the match for third place).

More information can be found in the list of all previous World Cup Champions and in the overview of which countries have won the World Cup and how often.
