What does the smiley XO mean?

Question by Franko | Last update on 2021-06-28 | Created on 2017-09-28

I know, times are changing and the usual old-school smileys like :) or ;) seem not to be enough for today's hip generation anymore.

Again and again I am getting new creations, most recently, I received the smiley or abbreviation "XO" on my mobile phone. Sometimes, it is followed by the name of the sender.

Can someone enlighten me and tell me what the meaning of this smiley could be?

XO is standing for kiss and hug. The X is standing for the kiss, the O is standing for the hug.

By the way, there are also the variations XX (kisses), XOXO (kisses and hugs) or arbitrary random escalations like XXX or XXXXXX. You can learn more about that in the question regarding the meaning of XOXO and XX.
