What is a tropical night?

Question by Ive | 2017-07-30 at 17:12

It is currently really hot here and in the weather forecast of the news yesterday, they even talked about so-called tropical nights.

But what exactly is meant by a tropical night? Or does it just mean that the night gets very warm and humid?

In our latitudes, meteorologists are speaking of a tropical night, when the lowest temperature at night is not below 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).

All night long, it must be at least 20 degrees the whole time. A tropical night is extremely rare in middle or northern Europe. We often do not have more than 4 to 5 tropical nights per year. Only in the city centers that have lots of buildings and no nature, tropical nights are a little more common.

Incidentally, in the tropics themselves, one does not speak of tropical nights. The temperature does not drop below 30 °C (86 °F), even at night there.

PS: In addition to the tropical nights, there are also the desert days.
